19 North American Aviation T-28 Trojans and their pilots will be practicing formation flying at the Sheboygan airport training for their performances at Oshkosh Air Adventure next week.
The T-28 Trojan was a trainer that was built right after WWII to train pilots to fly jets. The T-28 Trojan was the last U.S. trainer to use a radial engine; a Wright 1820 cubic inch, 1425 HP, motor. Itt burns about 55 gallons of high octane fuel per hour in normal cruise power settings going a little over 200 MPH. The Wright motors were mostly salvaged from WWII B-17s. This year is the 70th Anniversary of the first flight of the Trojan that occurred in September 1949. T-28s were used as a Trainer by the Air Force, Navy and Army. Many were later converted to be very effective fighter/bombers in places Laos, Vietnam, Congo, Algeria and other CIA hotspots around the world. The Navy retired the T-28 in 1984 and the Army in 1988. The T-28s at Sheboygan are all civilian owned.
